Contract Management/Creating a Contract

Creating a Contract

Start a new contract from scratch, from a template, or by importing an existing file.

There are three ways to create a contract in Lawis: from a blank editor, from a pre-built template, or by importing an existing file. All three end up in the same rich-text editor where you can write, edit, and analyze your contract.

Option 1 — Create from scratch

  1. Click Create Contract

From the contracts list screen (/contract), click the Create Contract button in the top-right corner.

  2. Choose a category

Select the contract category that best describes your agreement: Labor, Commercial, Real Estate, Finance, Technology, or Services.

  3. Give it a title

Enter a descriptive title for the contract — for example, "Employment Agreement — John Smith" or "SaaS Agreement — Acme Corp".

  4. Start writing

You'll land in the contract editor with a blank document. Start typing directly, or use the AI generation feature to get an initial draft.

Option 2 — Use a template

When creating a contract, click Choose Template to browse the template library. Lawis includes pre-built templates for the most common contract types in each category. Templates include standard clauses for the relevant jurisdiction and contract type — a good starting point that you can customize.

You can also save any contract as a custom template for reuse across your organization.

Option 3 — Import an existing file

If you have an existing contract as a PDF or DOCX file, use the Import option from the contracts list screen. Lawis will extract the text from the file and load it into the editor, where you can then run AI analysis, add comments, and manage the contract's lifecycle.

Using AI to generate initial content

Once you're in the contract editor, you can use the AI assistant to generate an initial draft based on your category, title, and any context you provide. To use this feature:

  1. Open the AI panel

Click the AI assistant icon on the right side of the editor to open the AI panel.

  2. Describe what you need

Type a prompt like "Generate a standard fixed-term employment contract under UAE Labor Law for a 1-year period".

  3. Review and edit

The AI will generate a draft in the editor. Review it carefully, fill in the specific details (parties, dates, compensation), and modify clauses as needed for your situation.

Saving your contract

Contracts are saved automatically as you edit. You can also use Ctrl+S / ⌘+S to manually save. The contract status starts as Draft and remains there until you explicitly change it.

Important

AI-generated contract drafts are starting points, not finished legal documents. Always review generated content with a qualified legal professional before use, and ensure all specific terms (parties, dates, compensation, jurisdiction) are correct for your situation.
