Document Translation/Overview

Document Translation

Translate legal documents into 15+ languages directly from the document viewer, with translations cached for instant repeat access.

The Lawis Document Translation feature lets you translate any legal document in the Lawis database into more than 15 languages without leaving the document viewer. Translations are generated by an AI model trained to handle legal language and are permanently cached, so the first translation is the only one that takes time.

How it works

When you select a target language for a document, Lawis checks whether a translation for that document and language combination already exists in storage. If it does, the translated text is served immediately. If it does not, the translation is generated on demand and then stored so that every future request for the same document and language is instant.

Translations are stored in Azure Blob Storage using the same document ID as the source document, keyed by language. This means the cache is shared across all users — once any user triggers a translation, every subsequent request for that document and language benefits from the cached result.

Supported languages

Document Translation currently supports the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Dutch
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Hindi
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Turkish

How to use it

  1. Open a document — navigate to any document from the Search results or from a citation in an AI Chat response.
  2. Click the language selector — locate the language dropdown in the top-right corner of the document viewer.
  3. Select your target language — choose from the list of supported languages. If the translation has been cached previously, the translated text appears immediately.
  4. Wait for the translation to stream in — on a first-time request, the translation streams into the viewer with a progress indicator. You can read the document as the translation arrives.
Tip

Translations preserve legal terminology, article numbers, and citations accurately. Cross-references such as "Article 14 of Law No. 11-03" remain intact and formatted consistently with the source document.

Note

On first translation this may take 30–60 seconds depending on document length. All subsequent requests for the same language are instant.
