Asking Legal Questions
Learn what kinds of questions work best and how to have a productive legal conversation.
Getting high-quality answers from the Lawis AI Chat comes down to how you frame your questions. Here's how to ask effectively.
Starting a conversation
- Click New Conversation
From the chat sidebar or main screen, start a new conversation. Each conversation maintains its own context.
- Set jurisdiction context (optional)
Use the country selector in the message input to specify which jurisdiction you're working in — UAE, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, etc. This focuses the AI's retrieval on the relevant legal database.
- Type your question and send
Enter your question in the text input and press Enter or click Send. The AI will reason through your question and respond with a cited answer.
Questions that work well
The AI Chat excels at:
- Specific legal questions — "What are the notice periods for employee termination under UAE Labor Law?"
- Article interpretation — "What does Article 47 of the UAE Commercial Companies Law mean for LLC shareholders?"
- Compliance questions — "What documents does a company need to register in the DIFC?"
- Comparative questions — "How does the UAE and Morocco approach the same issue?"
- Contract interpretation — "What constitutes a material breach under GCC commercial law?"
- Procedure questions — "What is the process for filing a labor complaint in Dubai?"
Using follow-up questions
One of the most powerful features of AI Chat is multi-turn conversation. After an initial response, you can:
- Ask for more detail on a specific point — "Can you expand on the exceptions mentioned in Article 5?"
- Ask about a related topic — "Does the same rule apply to free zone companies?"
- Request a summary — "Summarize the key obligations in three bullet points"
- Challenge or clarify — "But what if the contract says otherwise?"
The AI remembers the full context of the conversation, so follow-ups are understood in context without you needing to repeat background information.
Questions that work less well
The AI Chat is a legal research tool, not a general assistant. It may give less useful answers for:
- Very vague questions without legal context
- Questions requiring recent news not in the legal database
- Requests for personalized legal advice about a specific case
Be specific. Instead of asking "Tell me about employment law", ask "What are the maximum working hours per week under UAE Federal Labor Law?" Specific questions produce more precise, citable answers.
